The Cantabrian Sea is known for its great importance in the fishing sector. Since ancient times, the population of northern Spain has fished from anchovies and bonito (white tuna) to large mammals such as whales.

It was November 13, 2002 when the oil tanker "Prestige" spilled 77,000 tons of heavy oil due to the accidental sinking of the ship. In its wake it left a desolate panorama, leaving the Galician coast polluted and covered with tar.

The Basque culture is well known for whale hunting. Since immemorial times, the Basques have developed techniques of whaling, even reaching places that at that time were to be discovered.
